Mehta: 110 Limbs Fitted at Fiji Jaipur Foot Camp

Organisers of the 2026 Jaipur Foot Camp say 110 prosthetic limbs have now been fitted in Fiji, as the team works towards a target of 650. The fittings are being carried out across Suva, Labasa and Nadi by the Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti, the Indian organisation behind the Jaipur Foot prosthesis, with work having started on October 6, FBC News reported on Tuesday.

Key facts

  • 110 prosthetic limbs fitted so far, against a target of 650, according to FBC News.
  • Work began on October 6 and is scheduled to finish in Nadi on November 26.
  • The camp is running in three centres: Suva, Labasa and Nadi.
  • Satish Mehta, president of the Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti, says the team is on track to meet its target.
  • Fijian technicians are being trained alongside the visiting team.

Why it matters

The camp is a time-limited, three-centre operation with a fixed closing date, which means anyone seeking a fitting has a defined window before the visiting team leaves. Mehta told FBC News that most patients can arrive in the morning and return home the same evening, a detail that matters for people travelling to Suva, Labasa or Nadi from outside those centres.

It also matters for what happens afterwards. Mehta says local technicians are gaining practical experience so they can keep providing fittings, adjustments and replacements once the team has gone — the difference between a one-off visit and a service that continues between camps.

How the camp is running

According to FBC News, the team has split the schedule across the country’s main population centres before wrapping up in Nadi on November 26. Mehta said the group is small but highly experienced, and that its leaders are personally committed to the work.

“It’s a small team, but it’s a very experienced team,” Mehta told FBC News, adding that patients who later run into problems go back to the same technicians because those technicians have also been working on Jaipur Foot limbs.

Not every case is finished in a day. Mehta says more complex cases may require additional time for training and practice before a patient goes home — walking on a new limb is taught, not simply handed over.

Who is behind the Jaipur Foot

The Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti is the organisation whose name is attached to the Jaipur Foot prosthesis, and Mehta is its president. The Fiji camp is one of its overseas deployments; the sources do not say how the Fiji visit is funded, how patients are referred, or whether any Fijian ministry is a partner, so this report makes no claim on those points.

Camps carrying the Jaipur Foot name are also run in India by other groups. The Free Press Journal reported that a free camp at Panvel, in Navi Mumbai, was due to fit about 102 people with artificial arms and legs on December 23, 2022, organised by the Ramsheth Thakur Social Society Panvel and the Sadhu Vaswani Mission Pune. That report also described a two-stage model: measurements were taken at an earlier camp in October, and the fittings followed in December. The Fijian camp is a separate exercise run by different organisers, and the sources do not link the two.

Background: the 2022 Fiji visit

This is not the organisation’s first camp in Fiji. Mehta told FBC News that the team exceeded its target during its previous visit in 2022, fitting 629 limbs against a planned 600 — which is the benchmark behind the confidence in this year’s larger figure.

The registration number is also running slightly ahead of the target. FBC News reports 651 people have signed up against a goal of 650 fittings, with Mehta saying the team will try to take on more patients who present themselves before the camp finishes.

What is not yet known

The sources do not break the 110 fittings down by centre, so it is not clear how many of them were completed in Suva, Labasa or Nadi. Nor do they say how many of the 651 registrations are repeat patients from 2022 seeking replacements, how many Fijian technicians are being trained, or what the camp costs in FJD.

There is also no detail in the sources on how the three centres were chosen, or on what referral path a patient outside those towns would use. Readers following Fiji’s health administration will note that no ministry official is quoted in the reporting on this camp.

The reach question is a familiar one for services delivered through short visiting programmes in a dispersed island country — the same geography that shapes projects such as the 399 villages targeted for solar electrification. On that point the Jaipur Foot camp sources offer only Mehta’s statement that most patients can travel in and out in a single day.

Fiji News will follow the camp through to its November 26 close in Nadi and report the final number of limbs fitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did the organisers meet their target the last time they ran a camp in Fiji?

Yes. Satish Mehta told FBC News the organisation exceeded its target on its previous visit in 2022, fitting 629 limbs against a planned 600.

What is the most the team has fitted in a single day at this camp?

According to FBC News, the team produced and fitted 21 prosthetic limbs in one day. Mehta described the group as small but very experienced.

Can people still come forward now that the camp has started?

Mehta told FBC News that 651 people have registered and the team will try to accommodate additional patients who come forward before the camp closes. The closing date is November 26 in Nadi.
