LTA: Queens Highway Crash Kills Two, Fiji Toll Now 41

Two 26-year-old men were killed in a head-on collision on the Queens Highway on the night of Monday, 13 October, taking Fiji’s current road death toll to 41, according to FBC News. The Land Transport Authority, which issued the statement on the crash, says preliminary information suggests dangerous overtaking may have contributed.

At a glance

  • When: the night of Monday, 13 October, reported by FBC News the following day.
  • Where: the Queens Highway. The report does not give the stretch, locality or district.
  • Who: two men, both 26. Neither is named.
  • Source of the statement: Acting Chief Executive Makitalena Drova, in a written LTA release.
  • Status: no arrest, charge or court appearance is reported.

Why it matters

The Authority’s response on record is a written warning to motorists. The statement announces no enforcement operation, no highway patrol surge, no road-engineering review of the Queens Highway and no police investigation outcome. That is consequential because the LTA simultaneously attributes the toll mostly to drivers being irresponsible behind the wheel — a diagnosis that locates the remedy with individual motorists rather than with road design, vehicle standards or policing levels, and one that a warning statement cannot itself test.

The practical measure of whether 41 marks a turning point is what follows: charges in this case, sustained patrols on the Queens Highway, or a published breakdown of how and where the 41 died. None of that has been published.

What the LTA said

Drova said motorists who disregard road rules endanger themselves and put innocent lives at risk, and that road markings and traffic signs exist to protect road users.

“Double lines are not suggestions,” Drova said in the statement carried by FBC News, adding that they exist to prevent dangerous overtaking and that drivers should not overtake if it is not safe to do so.

She also warned against speeding and reckless driving, saying a few minutes saved on the road are never worth the risk of losing a life, and called on drivers to obey speed limits strictly, maintain safe following distances and exercise patience.

What is not yet established

The overtaking reference is the LTA’s preliminary information, not a conclusion. FBC News does not report how many vehicles were involved, which direction each was travelling, who was driving, or whether the vehicle said to have overtaken has been identified. No agency other than the LTA is named and no police statement is cited — unlike cases where Fiji Police have publicly reclassified an investigation, as when Fiji Police treat a Nadi death as murder. The report also does not state the period the toll of 41 covers or compare it with the same point in an earlier year.

One caution on the cost figures in circulation

“What careless driving costs” has circulated in wire coverage this month attached to dollar amounts that are American, not Fijian: a report carried by AOL on 3 September put the economic cost of crashes in the US state of Idaho at up to US$6.1 billion in 2025. No equivalent costing of Fiji’s 41 deaths appears in the LTA statement, and Idaho’s estimate should not be read across to Fiji — the same conflation this site has flagged in wire headlines that carry no Fiji data and in reports published without Fiji figures.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the LTA say caused the Queens Highway crash?

The Land Transport Authority says preliminary information suggests dangerous overtaking may have contributed. That is the Authority’s working line, not a finding: no completed investigation, police determination or court process has been published.

What is Fiji’s road death toll after this crash?

41. That is the figure the LTA gave to FBC News as the current toll, with the two 26-year-old men killed on the Queens Highway included. The Authority says the deaths are mostly due to drivers being irresponsible behind the wheel.

What is the LTA asking Fijian motorists to do?

Acting Chief Executive Makitalena Drova’s statement asks drivers to treat double lines as a prohibition rather than a suggestion, to overtake only where it is safe, to obey speed limits strictly, to keep safe following distances and to exercise patience, saying a few minutes saved are never worth a life.

Does the US$6.1 billion careless-driving cost figure apply to Fiji?

No — it is an Idaho figure. AOL’s 3 September report summarised the Idaho Department of Transportation’s annual crash report, which counted 28,127 crashes and 252 deaths in the US state in 2025 and put the economic cost at up to US$6.1 billion. It carries no Fiji or Pacific data and no FJD amounts.
