No Fiji Data Behind ‘Inflation Eases’ Wire Headline

A headline circulating as “Fiji Inflation Eases From 15-Year High” is not supported by the reporting attached to it. The two source reports carry South African consumer price data only: one published by the South African business news site Bizcommunity in July 2024, the other by the South African news site News24 in December 2025. Neither mentions Fiji, the Pacific, the Fijian dollar, the Fiji Bureau of Statistics or the Reserve Bank of Fiji.

The headline reached this newsroom — Jobs for Fiji News, which publishes at news.jobsforfiji.com — through a syndicated feed that paired it with those two links. We cannot identify the wire service or aggregator that wrote it: the item arrived with no byline, publisher name or dateline. Readers who meet the same headline elsewhere should check which report sits behind it.

Key facts

  • Neither source report contains any Fiji inflation data; both cover South Africa, according to Bizcommunity and News24.
  • Neither report describes a 15-year high of any kind. The closest figure is News24’s count of a 15th consecutive month of South African inflation below 4%.
  • News24 put South African headline inflation at 3.5% in November 2025, down from 3.6% in October, with food price inflation rising to 4.4% from 3.9%.
  • Bizcommunity, writing 17 months earlier, reported South African food inflation decelerating for a seventh straight month, to 4.1% year-on-year in June 2024 — which it called the lowest since February 2020.
  • The two reports cover different periods and point in opposite directions on food prices.

Where to check Fiji’s real inflation figure

Fiji’s official inflation rate is published by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics in its Consumer Price Index releases, which name the month and the categories measured. The Reserve Bank of Fiji then reports on inflation and sets monetary policy in its economic reviews and policy statements. Those two sites are where any Fiji inflation claim can be settled in a minute, and neither body is cited anywhere in the two reports behind this headline. We hold no FBOS or RBF figure for the periods those reports cover and will not substitute a South African one; when a Fijian release lands, we will report the number with the release attached.

Why it matters for the Fiji economy

Fiji imports its fuel and a large share of its food, so the Fiji economy transmits world prices to the shelf through freight, the exchange rate and landed import costs rather than through domestic demand. That makes price expectations consequential: how much a household in Suva sets aside for a week’s shopping, how much a worker in Sydney or Auckland sends home, and how an importer prices stock bought months ahead. A headline promising relief from a “15-year high” shifts all three decisions, and a household or small business acting on it is acting on a South African number compiled from South African retail prices.

It also runs against the direction of the Fiji-specific cost reporting that does exist. Readers following Fiji current affairs have already seen the FCCC’s warning that fuel and shipping costs will lift Fiji import prices, and the approved 22.5% bus fare increase, which raises a fixed weekly commuting cost regardless of where any consumer price index sits. Those are domestic, documented and dated — the qualities the syndicated headline lacks.

What the two source reports actually said

News24 described a South African disinflation run interrupted by one category: headline inflation easing to 3.5% in November 2025, a 15th straight month below 4%, with meat the clear outlier on the back of a foot-and-mouth outbreak. Bizcommunity described an earlier and milder phase, food inflation slowing through June 2024 while drought pass-through in the grain complex and shipping diversions away from the Black Sea and Suez Canal remained the stated risks. Both are South African stories, attributed to Statistics SA data.

What this does not tell Fiji

None of those figures describe Fijian prices, and neither report names a Fijian institution. Readers tracking the external rate settings that do bear on Fiji can see our earlier reporting on a live Reserve Bank of Australia rate call and what it means for Fiji.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t South Africa’s inflation rate be read as a guide to Fiji’s?

Because the two measure different baskets in different currencies under different policy settings. The pressure News24 identified in November 2025 came from a South African foot-and-mouth outbreak in the meat supply chain, and the target News24 described — above 3% — is the South African Reserve Bank’s, not the Reserve Bank of Fiji’s. The figures are compiled by Statistics SA from South African retail prices, so they carry no information about what Fijian households paid.

What was the highest annual rate in the December 2025 report, if not a 15-year high?

Meat. News24 reported meat was on average 12.2% more expensive in November 2025 than a year earlier, which it called the highest annual rate since January 2018, when it was 13.4%. That is a single-category high of roughly eight years in South Africa — not a 15-year high in any headline rate, and not a Fijian figure.

How can a reader check whether a cost-of-living headline applies to Fiji?

Look for three things in the report itself: a dateline from Fiji, a named Fijian institution as the source of the number, and prices quoted in Fijian dollars. If a figure is attributed to a foreign statistics agency or central bank, it describes that country’s basket. The quickest confirmation is to open the Fiji Bureau of Statistics or Reserve Bank of Fiji release for the month named and compare the number.
